April 10, 2007 - Greg Hughel on the Mend….. Fairfax Eagles center Greg Hughel returned to work today following his unfortunate leg break at the Eagles’ first practice on February 10, 2007. Greg suffered a spiral fracture, breaking both his fibula and tibia, during a routine tackling drill. Greg was rushed to INOVA Fairfax Hospital where he underwent reconstructive surgery comprising the insertion of a titanium rod held in place by four screws. Greg returned to his native New Jersey following the surgery and has been undergoing intensive rehabilitation for the last few weeks. Greg will continue to rehab his leg in Fairfax for the next few months and should be off the crutches soon.
Unfortunately, it is likely that following this injury Greg will be forced to retire from playing rugby league. The Fairfax Eagles wish Greg the best for the future and hope he has a speedy and successful recovery. In recognition of Greg’s contribution to the club the Eagles will present the ‘Hughel Award’ to the player who shows the most commitment and heart during the course of the upcoming season. The Eagles will also ask Greg to take the field before our first home game this season to attempt the opening kick-off, leg permitting!
