Fairfax Eagles Rugby League Club

Round 3 Match Report - 6.21.2008

Fairfax Eagles 36 - 10 Philadelphia Fight

The Fairfax Eagles recorded their historic maiden victory against a gallant Philadelphia Fight on Saturday, running out 36 to 10 victors.

Played in yet more oppressive heat, the much improved Eagles outfit were able to remove a great deal of the ill discipline that had plagued them in the earlier rounds of AMNRL competition.

The Eagles started the match impressively, with their improved ball handling and intensity in defense contributing to some Fight errors that put the Eagles deep on the attack. The Eagles raced out to a 20-0 lead, spearheaded by center Charles Pramawat who made several scintillating line breaks, two from scrum restarts, and by Kevin Campbell, who was a constant menace to the Fight defense with his powerful running.

Weary legs and some poor discipline from the Eagles late in the half allowed the Fight to score a long range try and register their first points of the day.  The conversion was missed, and the score at the half was 20-4 in favor of the travelling Eagles.

After the break the Eagles then went about finishing the match as they started it and fought strongly to protect and extend their lead.  Each player showed guts and determination to secure the club’s first ever victory helping to quell any chance of a Fight comeback.

The Eagles managed to score with some impressive set piece plays and played a much more expansive style of rugby league than they had in previous weeks, which can be directly attributed to their superior handling and completion rate.  The scoreboard was threatening to run away from the home team, and may have if not for some poor decision making and misdirected passes from the Eagles deep in the Fight’s half.

The Eagles travelled away with an impressive 28 players and continue to build a strong club culture that will no doubt form the bedrock of many future victories.

The Fight played hard in difficult conditions and ran with determination through out. Full credit goes to their competitive attitude.

Man of the match was Charles Pramawat who scored his first of the season and made several impressive line breaks.  Charles was also a rock in defense for the Eagles.

Other try scorers on the day included Mike Zelinski who netted a brace, John Young who got his first of the season, and Sean Millar and Naysan Eshraghi, who each notched their second tries of the 2008 campaign.

Naysan Eshraghi (0/1) and James ‘Chemo’ Lewis (4/6) handled the Eagles kicking duties on the day.

The club would like to take the chance to thank the fans who travelled with the side and provided vocal and passionate support.  It was a long drive and all the players appreciated the off-field support.  Thank you!

Round 4 Preview:

This coming Saturday (6.28), the Eagles will travel to Washington DC to take on the Slayers.

With a 1-2 record the club will be looking to reverse the 40-14 defeat from round one.  It will be interesting to see just how much the young Eagles side has improved over the last few weeks since playing the Slayers in their inaugural match.  Given that both sides have started to hit their stride over the last few weeks, this match looms as being a highly entertaining affair.

The Eagles will look to continue their rapid improvement in the basic elements of rugby league, whilst refining more advanced concepts at practice over the coming weeks.
